The Power of Music

Music is more than just sound. It can change your mood, bring back a memory you forgot you had, or make you sit there and really think about what an artist is saying. This week, these are some of the songs that have been getting the most play from me.

1. "SAME SH!T" by Isaiah Rashad

Mr. Rashad is BACK! “SAME SH!T” has that low-fi, bouncy sound that Isaiah Rashad has pretty much mastered at this point. It sounds familiar without sounding old, and it reminds me why Isaiah has consistently found his way into my playlists since Cilvia Demo.

2. "Good Flirts" by Baby Keem feat. Kendrick Lamar & Momo Boyd

Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar on the same record already gets my attention, but this one has its own personality. It’s one of those songs where the chemistry between everybody involved is just as important as the lyrics themselves, and the track has enough going on to keep me coming back to it.

3. "If You Love Me" by Mozzy

It’s hilarious that Mozzy keeps finding his way onto these lists, because I listen to Mozzy so much you would think I was from Sacramento. “If You Love Me” is another example of what he does best: taking the realities and machinations of the streets and turning them into a story you can actually see in your head.

The message is pretty simple too. If you love somebody for everything they are, why would you suddenly expect them to become somebody completely different?

4. "Tell The Truth" by Mozzy feat. Shordie Shordie

Yes, Mozzy is on here twice. That should probably tell you something about how much I’ve been listening to him lately.

“Tell The Truth” has that laid-back feel that works perfectly with Shordie Shordie (Shoutout to Shordie Shordie), while Mozzy still brings the storytelling that makes his music stand out to me. Sometimes a collaboration just makes sense, and this is one of those times.

5. "Something in My Heart" by Michel'le

Now we’re going back.

“Something in My Heart” is quite possibly one of my favorite songs ever. Michel'le has such a recognizable voice, and the emotion in the song it's insane about that range.

Sometimes you don’t need all the extra production and theatrics. Just give me a singer who sounds like they actually mean what they’re singing.

6. "Change My Life" by Trick Daddy feat. Mark of Tre+6

This might be the Florida in me showing.

Trick Daddy let's you know about the life. Thug niggas don't live that long. TDD tells you about the true struggles of living in the streets, how ya own girl can stab you in the back.

Conclusion

Ultimately, this is another example of how random my music taste can be.

New music, older music, West Coast rap, Florida music, R&B, melodic records, storytelling, sometimes I’m looking for something deep and sometimes I just want something that sounds GOOD.

That’s what this list is about. Not necessarily the best songs out right now, just what I’m actually listening to.

I’ll be updating this list every month, so be on the lookout.
